Students from throughout Westminster Public Schools gathered at Ranum Middle School Feb. 11 to test their knowledge and skillls against each other in geography, math, spelling, computer and science at the annual Celebrating Academic Excellence event.
The day kicked off early with performances from the Westminster High School Orchestra and the Raging Harmonies singing group.
Then students and coaches marched into the auditorium for the School of Champions parade, which recognizes all contestants. Students had been practicing and competing at their respective schools for the Feb. 11 showdown.
Categories included spelling and geography bees at the middle school and elementary school levels, MathCounts and the Computer Explorers/Lego League Science Fair. Ranum’s own Adrian Florean brought home first place in the Middle School Spelling Bee for the second year. Westminster Mayor Herb Atchison, one of the judges, presented the trophy to Florean.
Lego League featured two students from the FIRST LEGO League state qualifying team. The team, Astrobotics, was represented by Damon Aguilar and Ezekiel Maestas, along with their coach Eric DeCourcey. Students Isiah Talk, Derek Lee and Hunter Lor also are members of the team but could not attend. All are students at Scott Carpenter Middle School and are interested in all things “video games and building.” Talk’s mother, Viviana Ruano, explained: “It helps them open their minds, keeps them out of trouble.”
