Picnic honors late artist’s love of teddy bears

What started as a request from a late friend has turned into an annual tradition for local art gallery owner Beverly Capra.

“I had a 91-year-old friend, Myran Russell Ten Eyck who was an artist and she had a huge collection of teddy bears that she wanted to find homes for,” said Capra, Iddle Bits of This and That Art Gallery owner.

“So last year we decided to organize a teddy bear picnic where children could come and pick out their very own bear to take home and care for.”

Unfortunately Ten Eyck has since passed away, but Capra has made it her mission to host the Teddy Bear Picnic every August at her gallery.

She said she had about 40 children of all ages last year and is expecting even more this year.

“I had babies last year, and I had children up to 12 last year,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun. I also plan on reading a poem I wrote about the purpose of the picnic to give the children an idea of why this is a special picnic honoring a special friend and artist.”

The Teddy Bear Picnic will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Iddle Bits, 3969 W. 73rd Ave. in Westminster.

The event will be packed with fun activities for children like painting rocks, reading books and other fun games. Capra will be providing prizes, lunch and all kindergarteners and first graders will receive a free bag of school supplies.

And of course, each child will take home a teddy bear of their own choosing.

“I have about 15 or so teddy bears left of Myran’s collection, but total I have about 60 or 80 bears donated from people in the community,” she said.

“It’s been so wonderful to receive the donations. I’m very neighborhood-oriented and it’s my passion to be a part of this community, the place I grew up in. So it’s great to have neighbors donate.”

Registration is required for the picnic and must be done by Aug. 17. To register call Capra at 720-266-5047 or email her at iddlebits@aol.com.

Cost is $15 for adults and $7.50 for children. For more information, visit www.iddlebitsartandgifts.com.
