Meeting on Affordable Care Act

Grassroots Education Team: Healthcare Colorado, GET:HC, has organized a panel of healthcare experts to explain the benefits of the new competitive insurance coming in 2014 and new benefits of the Affordable Care Act. A public information session will be from 6:15-8:30 p.m.  on Sept. 10 at the Lafayette Public Library, 775 West Baseline Rd,. It will include experts from state and local government agencies who will provide information as well as answer questions about the new insurance, a web portal where people can shop, compare and buy insurance. These people are deeply familiar with the intricacies of the Affordable Care Act and have experience in untangling it's workings to groups of citizens.

Upcoming open houses on Westminster Center

Westminster’s plans for a new downtown on the site of the former Westminster Mall took another step forward during an Aug. 26 presentation that outlined a development that includes multi-story office and residential buildings, unique public spaces and vibrant shopping areas. City planners and representatives from internationally recognized urban planning firm Torti Gallas and Partners showed off the first draft of a master plan that will guide future development of the 105-acre site, located at U.S. 36 and Sheridan Boulevard. The draft plan will be presented to the public for comment in September during a pair of open houses and online opportunities. The first open is house is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Sept. 18at the MAC, 3295 West 72nd Ave and the second open house is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 at the City Park Recreation Center, 10455 Sheridan Blvd. The public is also invited to participate in an online open house on WestyCOnnect (www.westyconnect.us) from Sept. 18-25.

Woman awarded culinary scholarship

Alyson Tabb of Westminster was chosen as one of five recipients of the prestigious James Beard Foundation Culinary Arts Scholarship sponsored by Omaha Steaks through the James Beard Foundation, an organization created to continue the legacy of iconic American chef, James Beard. The scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing many areas of culinary studies including cooking, baking, writing, nutrition, food studies, wine studies, and hospitality management. Tabb is currently a student at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY, majoring in Baking and Pastry Management. She has worked at the Walt Disney World Resorts as a Pastry Cook and has held many leadership positions. After graduation she hopes to land a job that will provide her with the experience needed to one day open her own café in the future. 

Day of Service opportunity offered to metro-Denver residents 

For the first time since the initiative’s inception, Xcel Energy employees will be joined by community members in the third annual Xcel Energy Day of Service, in partnership with CBS4, on Saturday, September 7, 2013 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon. The initiative touts nine volunteer projects and CBS4 and Xcel Energy are encouraging community participation from across the state. Xcel Energy Day of Service community volunteer opportunities range from planting and seeding, to river restoration and trail repair.
