Ethically deficient

Thanks to Bill Christopher for his column, January 3, 2019, specifically his discussion on the filling of the council vacancies.

I agree with his observation. While technically legal, the decision by the council to not hold an election to replace three council members leaving the council as a result of the 2018 General Election, is ethically deficient. The residents and voters of the City have been shortchanged as the decision does not live up to the spirit and intent of the City Charter regarding such matters.

It needs to be noted that Council Member David DeMott reported on December 10 that he had made a motion in Council to hold a special election. The motion was lost due to a lack of a second, so it was not even discussed or debated.

In his column, Mr. Christopher speaks of the growing influence of Emerge Colorado, a partisan group, represented by several council members in positions that should be non-partisan. According to Christopher, the incumbent council selected another member of Emerging Colorado to fill the first open position. What happens with the remaining two positions?

Joe Armstrong,
Westminster
