Water rate hike unfair
Without valid notification in our regular water bills, the Westminster City Council voted 5-1 to raise our water rates. The rates will rise 8 percent in Jan. 2018 and may increase again in two years. This was done without proving any shortfalls or plans for a specific project but the assurance of city staff that 25 percent of all pipes need to be replaced or repaired — without saying which locations need work or individual project costs. This would be done by doubling or tripling what many municipalities pay even while we hold superior, senior water rights - rights secured by previous generations of city leaders.
City staff has said that it’s not good to use the millions in existing reserve investments that clear thinking Councilor David De Mott suggested cover these undefined requests. It’s been classified as an “emergency” even as City Councilors and staff have admitted that it’s “not an emergency, we’ve been planning this for months.”
I encourage Westminster resident to go the city’s web site and listen to the minutes from the Sept. 28 meeting.
Councilors Emma Pinter, nominee for Adams County Commissioner and Shannon Bird, nominee for Colorado State House Representative, District 35, will not get my vote Nov 6.
Vote accordingly. Drain this swamp.
