One man was killed Aug. 2 and another fled the scene on foot after Westminster police responded to reports of a theft in progress.

Police responded to the shopping area at the 11800 block of Sheridan at 2:10 p.m. Aug. 2. Loss prevention staff at a store in the mall reported that a man had threatened them with a knife when they approached him.

Two men fled, one on foot and another in car. According to police, the man in the car tried to elude officers and to hit an officer with the car. Officers fired on the driver, who was taken to an area hospital and later pronounced dead.

The second suspect, who had fled on foot, was quickly found and arrested. They identified him on Aug. 3 as Joshua Valencia, 44. He’s been charged with the theft of $300 or more but less than $750.
