Local artists are invited to think Outside the Box to help transform Thornton’s traffic utility boxes from functional infrastructure into colorful and inspired works of art.
Fifteen artists or artist teams will be selected to paint the traffic cabinet boxes in multiple locations in Thornton. Community members, the Thornton Arts, Sciences and Humanities Council and city staff members will select the winning artists.
The goal of the Traffic Box Mural Project is to mitigate graffiti on the structures and to make them artful objects. The boxes are functioning units and need to be opened and operated. Final artwork must incorporate the inclusion of the existing required labeling for each unit.
Highly durable materials must be used, and the art must be able to withstand adverse weather, climbing and touching. Access must be possible at any time, and the contents of the boxes have the potential to generate extreme levels of heat.
Designs should be bold, original and exhibit artistic merit. Up to three designs may be submitted per artist/team. Designs will be ineligible if they are not original and include trademarks, brand or business names, logos or copyrighted images. Art images that relate to drugs, alcohol or offensive material will not be considered. Collages or gluing on to the box are not allowed.
Each selected artist/team will be given a stipend of $2,000 per box; $500 will be given upon design approval and contract, and the remainder upon completion of the mural.
The project is open to all artists/artist teams, but preference will be given to those who live in or attend school in Adams County. City employees are not eligible.
Proposals are due by 5 p.m. Feb. 3, and selections will be made by early March. Painting must be completed by July 2 for the unveiling. For a list of application requirements and other information, go to http://www.cityofthornton.net/arts and click on open calls for entry and galleries.
