District urges parents to follow school happenings

Posted

With most Jefferson County students scheduled to return to school on Aug. 14, the district is encouraging members of the school community to stay in the know on important dates, events and tips for success this school year.

As the year gets underway, parents and community members can stay on top of what's going on in Jeffco Public Schools by keeping five things in mind:

Follow social media accounts

The district has advised parents to follow its accounts on social media, its quickest method for disseminating news. Jeffco Public Schools runs the following accounts:

Twitter: @JeffcoSchoolsCo

Instagram: jeffcoschoolsco

Facebook: @JeffcoPublicSchoolsColorado

YouTube: JPS-TV: The Official YouTube Channel of Jeffco Public Schools in Colorado

Additionally, community members can follow and communicate with Superintendent Jason Glass through his Twitter account, @COJasonGlass.

Download the Jeffco App

Parents can also stay up-to-date through the Jeffco Public Schools app, Jeffco Schools CO, available on the App Store.

The app links to the district's social media feeds and lists district news while also allowing users to opt into notifications for specific schools through the Settings menu.

Parents and students can also check up on lunch menus, sports scores and school contact information through the app.

Enroll in free and reduced lunch

Families are still invited to explore whether their student qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, with applications open now. Families enrolled in the program last year must reapply for the 2019-2020 school year if they have not done so already since the start of reenrollment on July 1.

Because of the passage of the Expansion of the Lunch Protection Act earlier this year, students in grades 9 through 12 will no longer be charged a 40-cent co-pay for reduced-price lunch meals. Qualifying students in all grades will be eligible for free meals during lunch and breakfast.

Jeffco Food and Nutrition Services has asked parents to apply through an online portal at SchoolCafe.com. Families may also submit a paper application by contacting Food and Nutrition Services at jeffcoschoolfood.org/contact-us or contacting their school directly.

Check in on Jeffco Builds

For those interested in learning more about ongoing construction projects, the district provides updates and information through its Jeffco Builds page.

Included on the page is a list of featured projects, such as playgrounds, tracks and fields and additions, as well as a map providing parents or students more information about upcoming projects at their schools.

The page also offers info on district bonds, breaking down the amount of bond money available and how that money is being used.

Board of Education elections

Two of five seats on the Board of Education, Director District 3 and Director District 4, are up for election this year. Both candidates will serve a four-year term ending in 2023.

Candidates must be registered to vote, have been living in the school district for a year or longer and live in the district in which they are running for office.

Potential candidates can submit petition packets through Aug. 30 at the Board of Education office, 1829 Denver West Drive, Golden.
