Adams County resident can get an in-depth look at how trials are handled this fall as the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office hosts a Citizens Academy.
Participants will interact with veteran prosecutors and representatives from other law enforcement agencies and gain an inside look into how the criminal justice system works.
The free eight-week program will examine how a murder case is investigated and prosecuted, crime scene investigation, constitutional rights, the coroner’s office, arson investigations, victim-witness services, and the impact of drug trafficking and the opioid crisis on the 17th Judicial District.
“Our Citizens Academy has been a real hit with the public since we offered it seven years ago, and we’re looking forward to another great program,” said District Attorney Dave Young.
This year’s academy will include a session on the Walmart shooting and the impact on victims. A session on officer-involved shootings includes a presentation by an officer who was shot in a confrontation. The academy concludes with a mock trial on a “Make My Day” case with students serving as jurors.
The academy will be held Thursday evenings 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. from Sept. 17 to Nov. 5 at the District Attorney’s Office at 1000 Judicial Center Drive in Brighton. Applications are due by Aug. 30.
