As the continued brutal spring weather in Colorado passed through one last time, it didn’t slow down Holy Family junior Hailey Schalk from winning her third-straight state title Monday in the 4A girls golf state tournament at Pelican Lakes in Windsor.
Because of the wintery, snowy mix, the 2-day event was condensed to one on May 20. Dominating the field, Schalk shot an even-par to win the round and the tournament by six shots. The Lady Tigers’ phenom is the first individual to win three state titles since Mullen’s Ashely Tait in 2002, 2004, and 2005. Schalk, Tait and Cherry Creek’s Lynn Ann Moretto (1995-1997 winner) are the only three to accomplish this feat since the sport became warranted in 1990.
With her senior year upcoming, she hopes to break even more history a year from now.
In 5A, North Metro competitors from Legacy and Northglenn placed in the top 60 at the Harmony Club in Loveland Monday. Legacy sophomore Mia Blackard finished 49th at 15-over while Northglenn senior Leticia Delgado finished 59th at 19-over.
