MORE: Meet Joan Chávez-Lee
As a former Jeffco teacher and principal, and as a former Jeffco parent and now grandparent, I believe that I have the experience and perspective that will allow me to be a positive and collaborative member of the Jeffco School Board.
I believe that I am the best person for this job because I have been involved with Jeffco Public Schools since 1987. My involvement with the district has been as a parent, teacher, principal, community member, and grandparent. In these capacities I have always advocated that all students need the best education possible in our district.
My top three priorities are: meeting the mental health needs of students, closing achievement and opportunity gaps in the district and providing competitive compensation for our employees.
We need to continue to identify what and where the opportunity gaps are in the district. These gaps may be items like subject matter content classes or extracurricular activities such as the arts or sports. It is then important to identify ways that our students can gain access to the identified gaps such as through on-line learning or grant funded after-school activities.
The district can better ensure student learning meets state standards by continuing to follow the continuous school improvement process of setting goals, identifying ways to improve and then evaluating if the improvements have been successful. This process needs occur at the district, school and classroom level.
