Medical leave important for families

The Family Medical Leave Insurance Act is currently being discussed at the Colorado State Capitol. This bill would mean that Coloradans would be able to take paid time off from work to recover from an illness, take care of a loved one and have a baby.

I have a friend who was excited to have a baby with her husband. They had waited and saved money because they knew how expensive it is to have a baby. After finding out that she was pregnant, she found out that her company does not offer paid family leave.

Shocked by this news, she was concerned how they were going to survive. Even with all the money that they saved, it is not going to be enough to cover her time off from work on top of the expenses of having a baby.

My friend wants to be able to stay with her baby for three months. This is some of the most important time a mother can spend with her child. This is not currently possible for her.

Under the current proposal for the Family Medical Leave Insurance Act, all workers in Colorado would be able to benefit from 12 weeks medical or family leave. For women like my friend who have complicated pregnancies this paid leave can be life-changing.

I know that many of my Coloradan families are struggling with growing their family and financial issues make it unnecessarily difficult. We need the Family Medical Leave Insurance Act now.

Jessica Kabala,

Thornton
